Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Sri Lanka, accounting for 27% of all new cancer cases. Annually, approximately 15 new cases are detected daily. While primarily affecting women, men can also develop breast cancer at a ratio of about 1:100.

Is It Treatable?

YES — with early detection, the 5-year survival rate for localized breast cancer is 99%. Even advanced breast cancer has improving outcomes thanks to modern targeted therapies and immunotherapy. Regular screening is key.

⚠️ Warning Signs

  • A new lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
  • Change in size or shape of the breast
  • Skin dimpling, puckering, or redness
  • Nipple pulling inward or discharge
  • Persistent pain in the breast or nipple area

🔴 Risk Factors

  • Family history of breast cancer
  • Late first pregnancy or no children
  • Early menstruation or late menopause
  • Obesity and lack of physical activity
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals
  • BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations

🔍 Screening & Detection

Monthly breast self-examination, clinical breast exam annually, and mammograms starting at age 40 (or earlier for high-risk women). The Asiri AOI Cancer Centre offers advanced 3D mammography and PET-CT scanning.
